Smart owners of growing businesses understand the importance of staying connected with consumers. One of the latest marketing trends is the use of Twitter, a micro-blogging Web site that has gained worldwide notoriety. The social marketing tool allows business users to immerse themselves in their industry, build brand awareness, and reach out to customers and prospects with posts (aka “tweets”) of 140 characters or less. There are now more than 14 million Twitter users worldwide.
“This free service is proving to be a key component in the online marketing strategies of leading companies, ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500s,” says Tiffan Clark, vice president of marketing at JumpStart Inc., the venture development organization behind IdeaCrossing, an online resource that connects entrepreneurs with investors and business mentors. If you’re planning to use Twitter as an online marketing tool for your business, consider these tips from IdeaCrossing:

- Develop your brand. Twitter is a network of people, so avoid being too rigid or self-promotional. Show your personality: upload a photograph of yourself, personalize your username and bio, and provide actionable advice that your followers can use.
- Find and follow. Let Twitter do the initial work. Use the “Find people” tool to search your email contacts and follow anyone already tweeting. Next, use keywords to search for industry leaders and active users. Remember, it’s not about the quantity, but the quality of your followers.
- Listen before tweeting. What are peers/prospects/experts sharing with their followers? Retweet their posts if you find them valuable to your network. Comment to add to the dialogue. Create thought-provoking ideas, promote new blog posts, announce events, share venture launches, and post links to Web sites and articles you enjoy. Don’t merely tell people what you are doing at that moment. The most successful Twitterers share useful and relevant information.
