3 tips for making patience a virtue in the workplace

Count Joey Reiman among those who believe patience is indeed a virtue. In his book Business at the Speed of Molasses, he calls for a more purposeful, meditated approach to thinking. “We’ve rewarded ourselves for speeding up, for taking hip shots and having them work out,” he says. “The ones who are moving slowly are the ones who find dramatic financial revenue increases.” Here are three other tips to consider:

  1. Identify the master idea. Know what makes your company distinctive — how it impacts public life, not just public perception.
  2. Don’t worry about the competition. Move away from the notion of being the authority. Focus on what made your company great in the first place.
  3. Free employees from work. Every year, BrightHouse employees spend March 4 away from the office, doing things they have never done before (such as fishing). The day’s theme is March 4th on Your Dreams. Other companies are following suit.
