Social networking is all the rage in Internet marketing/online advertising, but the importance of building strong customer relationships is often forgotten. Business relationship and Internet advertising expert Drew Gerber, CEO of PitchRate.com, recommends that individuals and businesses do not forget the honey when using tools such as Twitter and LinkedIn. He offers these secrets to social networking success:

- Don’t be stingy. Be interested in what others are up to and share. Many people forget to share and only promote themselves. Take an interest in the person behind the code.
- Share your toys. For every one tip you get; provide 12. Don’t worry, there’s more from where that came from. What goes around comes around.
- Remember the Golden Rule. It’s easy to talk badly about someone online, but avoid it. Be kind and treat the person the same way as you would if they were in front of you.
- Let everyone play. Often, social networks can turn into a high school clique situation; the people who are most successful are those who are inclusive versus exclusive.
- Don’t take yourself too seriously. Keep it light. People gravitate toward humor.
- Try something new. Everyone is bored with hearing and reading about the same things over and over again.
- Be truthful. Never say you are very busy in a business relationship, only to post nonsense time-wasters like “Do you know me?” quizzes or “Guess my favorite movie.”

Nice little article on the social networking tips. I’ve tried to tell my friends in a polite manner, that I do not care to find out, “What flavor oatmeal”, “Color Sharpie”, “Care Bear Character” or “Which pair of Richard Simmons Shorts” I am. I also am not interested in playing the Facebook version of Dungeons and Dragons, known as Mafia Wars. So no need to send me the quizzes and invitations.
I also have no real need to know that you’re heating up a bowl of soup, sitting down to watch an episode of the Price is Right or even feeling sleepy and thinking about going to sleep.
The only thing more annoying are the Facebook poets and philosiphers or the posers who are always in the midst of solving the worlds economic crisis with the latest business deal they are putting together…right after they finish their “Chipotle Burrito…yummmmm!”
